1 John: Truth and Light

A. Introduction/Review

A letter from John the Apostle, Around 90 AD. The tone is pastoral, but radical.
Assurance of salvation that proves itself out in a life fully committed to following.

1 John 3: 4 The roof off and the walls down - a call to revival.

Verse 8: "If we claim to be without sin, we deceie ourselves."

Admitting specific sins opens the door to deal with sin.

Two repeated words: Know and Obey (keep)

In context, a powerful truth emerges. The life and maturing of John.
John was a man for the truth, but he was lacking in love in the early years.

Zeal for the truth must be balanced with love for people.

Confession & Repentance

"A shallow, tolerant sentimentality is a poor substitute for genuine love."

B. Walk as Jesus Walked

A specific test of walking in the light - loving your brothers.

We wrongly withhold our affection. We do not show our love or deeds of love. Scriptual reason:

Now to the one who is blinded (verse 11) we must witness to the Light.

Love: laying your life down, loving as Jesus loved, denying one's self.

It also means having an expectation of growth.

Filled with the Spirit
Passion for God
Boldness for the Gospel
